We are very proud to announce the participation of Seba Calfuqueo in Stranieri Ovunque - Foreigners Everywhere, the 60th International Art Exhibition of the Biennale di Venezia, curated this year by Adriano Pedrosa.

Mapuche artist Seba Calfuqueo (Santiago de Chile, 1991) has been selected to show her work You Will Never Be a Weye (2015) at Nucleo Contemporaneo, as part of Marco Scotini's project "Disobedience Archive", who since 2005 has developed a video archive focused on the relationships between artistic practices and activism.

“This work evokes the bodies of knowledge that have been denied to indigenous cultures by colonization, a denial that extends - by the act of patriarchy - to the dominion over our own identities and bodies. Before the arrival of the Spaniards to the lands enclosed by the political borders of the state of Chile, there existed the Machis Weyes: subjects who did not conform to gender binarism: they could move through both the feminine and the masculine.

The Weyes were exterminated almost entirely with the arrival of the Spaniards and their annihilation was based, mainly, on the accusation of committing the sin of sodomy, condemned according to the mandates of the imposed Catholic religion. From this chronicle I propose an interweaving with my own biography that starts from the premise: "in the Mapuche culture there are no faggots". This phrase, said by my paternal grandmother, who calls herself pure Mapuche, is her reaction to the possible encounter with a transvestite nephew. In the performance "You will never be a Weye", the reappropriation of an identity denied -through silence- by history, religion and patriarchy is sought, ironizing with costumes that simulate real clothes -like a disguise- together with a synthetic wig."
