The exhibition “World of Networks” opened this week at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Jill Magid is participating with two works: “Surveillance Shoe” (2000) and “Legoland” (2000).
“Legoland” is the video filmed during a nighttime walk through the city of Boston, Massachusetts with the “Surveillance Shoe”. Exhibited for the first time, this device is composed of a high heel shoe, an IR surveillance camera, a battery pack, and wireless transmitter located in the sole.
“I do not become powerless by attaching a technology such as the surveillance-shoe to my body. I use the conjunction of my body and the camera as a way of experiencing the city anew. I like that initially I do not recognize my body as it appears through the lens of the camera. (…) Even after I remove the shoe, the city persists as a potential playing field. I do not give up my ‘simple’ eyes, but use the camera-shoe to extend them.”
