Irene Kopelman's residency in the Galápagos Islands
With the support of Botín Foundation,Argentine artist Irene Kopelman is currently in residency at the Charles Darwin Foundation

With the support of Botín Foundation, Argentine artist Irene Kopelman is spending a month developing a project at the Charles Darwin Foundation in Puerto Ayora, Galapagos Islands (Ecuador), together with Restoration Ecologist Heinke Jäger, PhD.

During this month Irene will be working in the field understanding the nuances of drawing and thinking about a tree called Cinchona - an artistic examination of the early European encounters with Cinchona and the discovery of quinine as a treatment for malaria which led to the tree's global expansion. Moving from the phenomenon of invasive species, the project will explore how colonial activities have caused ecological imbalance in certain regions, tracing its impact to the present day.
