Ushering in the one-hundred-year anniversary of the landmark Schindler House, the MAK Center for Art and Architecture presents Schindler House: 100 Years in the Making. The four-month exhibition and programming series celebrates the pivotal first century of the landmark modern house in Los Angeles by Austrian-American architect R.M. Schindler.

Schindler House: 100 Years in the Making emphasizes acts of making, unmaking, and remaking carried out by artists, architects, historians, writers, organizers, and cultural practitioners that have constituted the house and its mythos over this century.

Gala Porras-Kim participates with two works that evoke the construction and conservation processes of this iconic house located in West Hollywood, California.

Porras-Kim wrapped parts of the house that were added after the original was built –like bulbs or pipes–, with red felt as felt is the only material allowed to touch the walls for conservation purposes. The felt references a “revision cloud,” a red cloud shaped mark that designates changes in architectural plans.

The block of cement is saturated with salt so as time goes by it will “bloom” creating efflorescence, which will slowly break it down. This trick was used to “naturally” demolish buildings that were not allowed to be modified.
